GHOST BUSTERS!

But really, I think the common wisdom is to find a decent mechanic in that area and ask if he can look it over. Or something. Really I just wanted to make that joke.

Depends on the boutique. I know of a few good ones (and a few awful ones to stay away from).

Please don't buy a used/secondhand/pre-owned without taking it for a spin first.

Maybe hop on Rennlist and see who they'd recommend for a pre-purchase inspection in the area? Good folks on that forum. Definitely get it checked out before buying it, though.

Also, BUY IT.

I'd call Tom too. I'd also look at various sites like Dealer Rater or even Yelp to see if the dealer is good. In other words, do your research to make sure they're not a fly-by-night or known for having craptastic cars.

Really depends on how far you´d have to travel to see the car. Is it worth it? Personally I´d never ever ever ever buy a car without seeing (it in person) and testdriving it first. Even after testdriving I´m still wary of possible faults etc. I´ve learned that it really pays off to be paranoid as fuck when buying a car...

I´d call them first, make sure I´d ask much as possible about the car. Service history, mileage, current state etc. If the the person on the phone sounds genuine and his is response is positive, then I would go see the car. If I´m not familiar with the type/brand of car then I make sure I know the tyical defaults of that specific brand. Or better, take somebody with you who really knows/ owns the same car.

But yeah, it depends. Is it worth the hassle (money/ time) of going to that far away city and seeing the car in person. If not, just be patient, another gem wil surely come your way....

what city? Maybe an Oppo lives close by and can swing by and give you more insight, perhaps with pics.

If it's that good of a deal then you shouldn't be hesitating.

my only hesitation NOW is that i prefer the look of a 997, but i've never driven one. this is a 991 — mint and fully loaded — and i know i love to drive these. but maybe the 997 is better...

Won't know til you drive one. I went to buy a Mustang, test drove it, didn't really care for it and bought a Camaro after test driving one on the lot.

I don't have school for the next two months, and Bob Ingram's Porsche owning and restoring son's number is about three away from my mom's. Which city am I flying to and where am I drive back to?

I mention the school thing, because then you must assume that I am a broke college kid with all of a box of ramen and a t-shirt that says "this is my kegstand" shirt on it, except upside down to my name.

Sadly only new cars. If only there was a neutral buyer for sub 60k cars for people. Like what Wayne Carini does for some clients, except for a 308 instead of a Daytona.

Classic cars such as 70 Chevelle or just used cars as in a 2009 Pilot?

If it comes from a dealer, yes
